Fifty Gates of Wisdom

Haza, Ofra

Ofra Haza was born in 1957 and died before her time in 2000. Her family emigrated on foot from Yemen to Israel losing most of their few valuable possessions on the journey. She joined The Hatikva Community Centre Theatre as a singer when she was only 13. Over the years, she became an immensely popular singer recording many best-selling albums, two of which went platinum and six going gold. In 1980, 1981 and 1986, she won the Israeli equivalent of the Grammy for Best Female Singer. In 1985, she decided to record an album of songs drawn from the unique ancient musical tradition of Yemen, her ancestral home. These were social songs, wedding songs and festival songs which she had grown up hearing and were an as yet unexpressed part of her musical soul. Together with her producer Bezalel Aloni, she took the innovative step of recording these timeless melodies and rhythms with contemporary settings and state of the art recording technology so that the music sounds as mainstream as the latest pop hits. In fact "Galbi," included on this album, has been palyed in dance clubs around the world. This was the magic of Ofra Haza, one of the world's greatest voices bringing the eloquence of Jewish antiquity into the electronic age. (Copyright 1989 Shanachie Records)
